Select Board · Meeting of June 1, 2026
SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield City Council accepted more than $15.8 million in federal housing and community development grants and sent a Youth Commission overhaul back to committee after members objected to being excluded from oversight. City Solicitor Stephen Bonacani said the rewritten ordinance shifted appointment authority to the School Committee, prompting Councilor Walsh to say she found it "very interesting" that the council was asked to amend a commission "having no input." Councilors Hurst, Click-Bruce, Perez, Brown and Davila raised similar objections before Councilor Santanello's motion to refer the item to the General Government Committee passed 12-0, with Councilor Delgado absent. The council also confirmed Angela Rivera to the Springfield Redevelopment Authority, approved $625,000 and $800,000 in free-cash transfers covering health insurance, workers' compensation and a firefighters' contract, and referred a resolution on tornado-era East Forest Park sidewalk repairs to committee on the disaster's 15th anniversary.
