SPRINGFIELD — A Springfield City Council committee reviewed Mercy Medical Center's behavioral health funding and heard that a state and federal addiction treatment grant has grown to as much as $6 million. Dr. Rodriguez, Trinity Health of New England's regional director of behavioral health, told councilors the Addiction Consult Service grant started at $1.17 million and said hospitals are reimbursed only $80 to $120 of a typical $300 behavioral health consult, calling staff sustainability an ongoing challenge: "The doctor's salary doesn't work like that." Councilors said alcohol-related emergency visits numbered in the "hundreds" and exceeded other drug categories. Rodriguez confirmed Mercy's pending acquisition by Baystate Health is structured as a "member substitution" that will keep current services in place.
Commissioner Carlton Harris said the city holds a $1 million contract with Mercy for homeless health services, while Councilor Zayda Govan said housing remains "the one piece that's missing" from the city's treatment coordination efforts.
