Springfield's Maintenance and Development Committee continued a hearing on discontinuing Cloverdale Street to give a mosque and a neighboring church time to resolve access to land both own. Attorney David Bartley, representing a mosque planning a 21,000-square-foot relocation from 148 Fort Pleasant Street, said the project would not cross onto land owned by Breakthrough Worship Center, whose board member Christina Kakarchuk asked "are we going to be able to have access to that land that we also own?" Ward 6 Councilor Victor Davila backed the project after touring the site. The committee will keep the item on its May 4 agenda before continuing it to May 18.
Separately, a Department of Public Works official said the city secured $15 million in federal funding toward an $18 million project replacing signal backplates at 15 intersections, drawing pushback from Mason Square advocate Martina Scheider, who said "Mason Square gets nothing. We have nothing."
