Other Committee · Meeting of July 9, 2026
Southwick lake committee votes to alert Planning Board to flood risks from development ramp structures. The committee, which oversees lake and waterway issues, voted unanimously at its July 9 meeting to send a letter to the Southwick Planning Board warning that large access ramps, described as approximately 30 feet long, associated with buildings already situated in a flood zone could break free during a severe storm and block a downstream bridge or direct floodwaters into neighboring areas. Members argued the committee's standing was grounded in drainage: "The reason we're involved is not because great growth is under a jurisdiction, why we're involved is because great growth just flows into kind of a different place to go." The meeting also produced a confirmation from consulting firm Stantec that hydrilla, an aggressive invasive aquatic plant, has been positively identified in the lake, with updated distribution maps pending, and a report that dock contractor Shoremaster has completed the second half of a town beach dock installation.
