Southwick EDC backs rail trail grant, zoning review

Other Committee · Meeting of September 16, 2026

Southwick's Economic Development Commission voted unanimously to pursue a full slate of short-term goals, from a rail trail grant to a zoning bylaw review. Town Planner and Economic Development Director Alvin Allen told the commission the town could qualify for a Complete Streets grant worth "$500,000" during a November-to-January application window, on top of a separate $45,000 state ECO One-Stop grant already awarded for zoning modernization. The commission also set two master plan priorities for 2026: a formal business tax-incentive policy recommendation and continued business-leader meetings.

Allen reported the Planning Board is reviewing a WGI manufacturing expansion that tested the town's major development review bylaw for the first time, a cannabis cultivation proposal from Pioneer Valley Trading Company, and a rebranded office building at 591 College Highway. "It appears now we can likely move forward with an approval," Allen said of WGI's revised plan.
