Springfield City Council voted 9-4 to send a mandatory in-person attendance resolution to committee after a bitter debate. Councilor Martin proposed requiring councilors to attend meetings in person, arguing "the public wants it." Councilor Hurst countered with attendance data showing the council was 97 percent in-person this year once three councilors' remote appearances were excluded, warning the rule could deter seniors, single parents and people with disabilities from running for office. Councilor Santanello said the notification requirement could violate federal health privacy law.
The council separately approved $1.8 million in free cash to cover a snow and ice removal deficit and cleared the discontinuance of Cloverdale Street for a mosque and conference center project, despite an unresolved eviction allegation raised by Councilor Hurst and denied by mosque representatives.
