Conservation Commission Orders Independent Review of Nelson Street Wetland Boundary

EAST LONGMEADOW — May 13, 2026 — East Longmeadow Conservation Commission votes to seek independent peer review of a disputed wetland delineation at 0 Nelson Street. At the May 13 meeting, member Thomas O'Brien said vegetation, soil, and water conditions he observed during a site visit showed wetlands "clearly creeping into that back left corner" of the parcel — conditions not reflected on the applicant's plan — and the commission voted unanimously to continue the hearing to May 27, when it will formally authorize and fund a review of boundary flags B1 through B6, to be paid from commission funds. The panel also debated adding a certified arborist assessment of several large, apparently lightning-struck trees on the parcel to the peer-review scope. In separate action, the commission amended two enforcement orders: one at 30 Vineland Avenue, where a property owner submitted a restoration plan drafted by a paving contractor rather than a licensed wetland scientist, and one at 406-436 North Main Street, where shopping-cart and litter violations in a brook were escalated to target all plaza tenants in addition to the unresponsive property owner, with a June 24, 2026 deadline for a restoration filing.
