Brimfield Select Board funds groundwater site cleanup, pushes Spectrum on rural broadband gap. The board voted unanimously to draw $27,800 from the town's Thames River Grant account to pay consultant Tighe & Bond for site-closure testing tied to a decade-old contamination case, opting against a reserve fund transfer that would have required Finance Committee approval. Spectrum's Nancy Clark briefed the board on the pending cable license renewal, required to comply with a new FCC 5 percent franchise-fee cap, and touted the company's $25-a-month Spectrum Internet Assist program.
Vice Chair Crystal McGuire pressed Clark on roughly 13 east-end households that have lacked service for eight or nine years, calling the area "disconnected from the rest of the town." Chair Martin Kelly called the gap "inexcusable" and directed staff to make it a top priority in the renewal. The board also approved a $3,134.36 IT contract renewal, a sanitary worker job description, and grant applications for the Mill Lake Dam and New Holland Road Bridge.
