SPRINGFIELD -- The Springfield City Council devoted part of its Sept. 28 meeting to a proclamation honoring Baloncesto Superior de Massachusetts, a community adult basketball league, for crowning a 2026 champion.
COMMUNITY -- Council members recognized BSM and its champion team, Carolina/El Calentón, during the meeting's proclamation portion. Each participating team in the league represents a town from Puerto Rico; captains named during the proceedings included representatives from Ponce, Quebradillas, Mayagüez, Manatí, Aguada, Arecibo, Carolina and San Germán. The proclamation credited league leadership to Victor Levi-Cintron and Jenny Alvarado of the Lower Liberty Heights Council, and said games were played at Emilyville Park on Franklin Street. It was sponsored by Councilors Maria Perez and LaVar Click-Bruce and Council President Tracy Whitfield, and signed by clerk Gladys Lopez.
Speaking at the podium, Alvarado said the league has run for two years and that organizers are "looking forward to the 2027 season," which she said would likely begin "around maybe May." Medina said organizers hope to eventually add a program for children in addition to the adult league. Councilor Govan, noting the recognition, said she hoped a team representing her own community would join the league's play in the future.
