School Committee · Meeting of January 29, 2026

Springfield's School Committee approved three state grants, the FY27 budget calendar and a new innovation schools post. Voting 6-0 with member Hurst absent, the committee backed a $28,859 gardening grant and two fair share earmarks, one about $510,000 for translation systems, fire alarm replacement and accessibility upgrades. Vice Chair Naylor said "March 4th is the public input session" on the budget, and an April 8 subcommittee meeting moved to 4 p.m.

The committee created an Executive Director of Innovation Schools position as eight Empowerment Zone schools prepare to return to district management. Springfield Education Association President Riley Hernandez urged a mutual agreement on collective bargaining for those schools, and several special education teachers described injuries and understaffing.
