SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield School Committee adopted revised student and staff acceptable use policies that add artificial intelligence guidance. Chief Robert St. Lawrence said the student policy, renamed the Student Acceptable Use and Internet Safety Policy, grew out of an AI task force formed last year. A member pressed on AI smart glasses; Attorney Jeremy St. Laurent said the district is still working out where a staff rule should live, citing wiretap, student record and FERPA concerns.
Members also approved the 2026-2027 school calendar and an informational calendar, and received a petition for a March 30 hearing on eight innovation plans. The committee also honored schools for graduation-rate gains, Central High's girls and SciTech's boys basketball teams, and Discovery High's robotics team.
