Commission OKs Pond-Area Cleanup, Paving Plan
Springfield's Conservation Commission voted 5-0 to clear a pond-area cleanup and paving project.
Conservation · Meeting of June 9, 2026
Springfield's Conservation Commission voted 5-0 to clear a pond-area cleanup and paving project. Commissioners Juanita Martinez, Peter J. Alminas, Fred Miller, Clarence Jones and Frank Ryan voted yes to close the public hearing and again to issue a negative determination for the project, which includes a stormwater berm, invasive-plant removal, native tree plantings along Rokas Street, and silt fencing and straw wattles along the pond bank; some commissioners were absent. The work clears the way for an ambulance company to move into one of two buildings on the site.
In separate business, an abutting property owner asked about building a dock, and a commission representative told him "pretty much anything you're going to do that's going to disturb the soil is going to require some type of filing" because most of his backyard sits within the wetland resource area and the city's 50-foot no-disturbance zone.
