Agawam sports roundup, Sept. 14 to Sept. 20

AGAWAM -- Agawam had a light week for competitive results, but youth soccer and school athletic facilities produced the most notable updates of the period.

YOUTH LEAGUES -- Agawam Soccer Association announced what it called a "Record-Breaking 2026-2027 Travel Soccer Season," saying it is fielding 26 teams in the Roots Soccer League this year. The club's coaching staff and committee are finalizing roster assignments and are seeking volunteers to fill several open coaching positions across multiple age groups; anyone interested is directed to Jason Hanscom or Chris Chechile. The club also posted a coach-education schedule offering training sessions led by the U9 Boys coach (Heinze), the U13 Boys coach (Hanscom), and the U13 Girls coach (Regnier), open to other coaches seeking mentorship. Ball boy and ball girl assignments for Agawam High School varsity home games were also posted, with the 10U Boys team (Heinze) assigned to the boys' varsity game on Sept. 14.

At the Sept. 15 School Committee meeting, the district's operations and maintenance coordinator reported on summer facility work tied to youth athletics: Granger, Sapele, Clark and Deering elementary schools had their gym basketball hoops upgraded to self-adjusting, glass backboard models, and a new climbing wall with adjustable, safety-padded holds was installed at Sapele. Phelps Elementary received new wall padding in its gym. The superintendent also noted that intramural programs are set to begin soon at Agawam Junior High School.
