City Council General Government Subcommittee · Meeting of September 14, 2026
Springfield's General Government Subcommittee confirmed two changes to a proposed Youth Commission ordinance ahead of a full council vote expected Monday. City Councilor Hearst said the ordinance now adds a seat for the council president or a designee and reserves three seats for council appointees, both changes she requested at a prior meeting. City Councilor Walsh backed the measure, saying "I'm 100 for it," and tied it to a recent cyberattack that closed Springfield schools.
Commissioner Helen Colton Harris and Health and Racial Equity Coordinator Chanel Ford said the youth-led commission will address topics including youth mental health, food insecurity and civic engagement, with quarterly reports to the council. Ford said selection criteria for commission members are still being finalized. No subcommittee vote was taken; students from Libertas Academy are expected to speak before Monday's council vote.
